Chinese Model of a Well Head – Han Dynasty

Clay models like this were fairly common during the Han Dynasty which reflects the importance of agriculture to the economy of that time. The cylindrical base of this clay example has a superstructure to support a pulley system that is protected by a small gabled roof. The dark green lead glaze has over time degraded to a silvery iridescence.
