Javanese Cirebon Dance Mask – Tari Topeng

Cirebon in West Java is famous for its mask dance that is based on various poems (ie Ramayana) with its central figure prince Panji. The different styles of masks are countless as are the versions of the Panji chronicles. The color of the face and shape of the eyes indicate what type of character is being portrayed. This elegant and skilled carving of prince Panji has an unpainted face that uses the wood grain to bring life and expression to the mask. Signed on the back
