These naturally sculpted stones represented to Chinese scholars a focus for meditation of philosophic principles and served for contemplation prior to activities such as writing poems or painting. Some stones resemble mountain ranges but many also remind of famous people or mythical creatures. This Lingbi stone from Anhui Province is delicately textured with an irregular white and yellow veining. (mounted on a contemporary wooden stand)
